Lister Drive Greener Grid Park – Grid Stability Infrastructure
A pioneering grid stabilisation project.

B&S Group Solution
B&S Group was appointed to support the project through design, manufacture, and installation, delivering:
-
Two bespoke E-Houses, designed and manufactured by B&S Group
-
Full fit-out to house ABB variable speed drives and supporting systems
-
A balance-of-plant enclosure containing MV switchgear and control systems, supplied for the main contractor NRS
-
Factory-based assembly, fit-out, and testing at B&S Group’s Chester facility
By delivering fully integrated, site-ready units, B&S Group reduced on-site risk and supported efficient installation.
Outcome
The Lister Drive Greener Grid Park now provides essential grid stability through a 67 MVAr synchronous condenser, coupled with a 40-tonne flywheel, delivering the inertia required to maintain network frequency and voltage.
The site enables increased integration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, while supporting grid resilience without reliance on fossil fuels — a key milestone in the UK’s decarbonisation journey.

The Challenge
As renewable energy generation increases, maintaining grid stability without traditional rotating power stations presents a major technical challenge.
The Lister Drive Greener Grid Park required infrastructure capable of:
-
Replicating the inertia traditionally provided by fossil fuel power plants
-
Supporting network frequency and voltage stability
-
Housing advanced power electronics and control systems
-
Delivering a highly engineered solution within a compact, urban environment
The project demanded close collaboration between technology providers, engineers, and infrastructure specialists.
