The Challenge
Grid-scale BESS projects require highly integrated power infrastructure that can be delivered efficiently while meeting strict performance, safety, and programme requirements.
For the Coylton site, the challenge was to design, build, and deliver large-scale HV and LV substations that were fully assembled, tested, and ready for rapid installation — minimising on-site activity and ensuring seamless integration within a constrained energy park environment.
B&S Group Solution
B&S Group was appointed to design, manufacture, and deliver two fully completed substations, each engineered and assembled at our Chester facility before transportation to site.
The scope of works included:

Design, fabrication, and full fit-out of one HV and one LV substation

Factory build and commissioning within a controlled environment

Delivery of two large-scale units (each 14.7m x 3.9m)

Complex logistics planning and transportation, including police escort

Safe offloading and placement at the Coylton Greener Energy Park site
This off-site build approach ensured consistent quality, reduced programme risk, and supported efficient site installation.
Outcome
The substations now form a vital component of Statkraft’s Greener Grid Parks, enabling smart energy management and supporting increased integration of renewable generation into the UK electricity network.
